The mission of GOT LUNCH! Campton-Thornton is to feed the school aged children of Campton and Thornton who might otherwise go hungry during the weeks of school summer vacation. GOT LUNCH! Campton-Thornton is a collaboration of school and community partners coming together to ensure that the children who live in our towns will have healthy lunches all summer. Although the program is open to all students, the target group is those children who are eligible for free or reduced cost lunches during the school year.
GOT LUNCH! Campton-Thornton operates under the Campton Area Resource Center (CARC) as part of their 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We have modeled our program after GOT LUNCH! programs in Laconia and Ashland. Like the other GOT LUNCH! programs, Campton-Thornton will not have eligibility requirements for participating families. Currently, about 35% of Thornton students and 50% of Campton students receive free or reduced cost breakfasts and/or lunches at school. Additionally, there are families in both towns who need a helping hand from time to time even though they are not eligible for federal or state assistance.
GOT LUNCH! Campton began delivering healthy lunch foods to families in 2013, and in 2014 Thornton joined in. In 2017, GOT LUNCH! Campton-Thornton served 3,400 lunches to 68 children with more than 40 volunteers helping to raise money, collect food, pack bags on Monday mornings and deliver those bags to families. We anticipate the number of participating families will increase in 2018. We will need more volunteers and more money to feed our local children.
The cost of the program is anticipated to be $100.00 per child per summer. In addition to cash donations, we welcome food donations such as peanut butter, jelly, canned tuna, canned chicken, canned fruit, and mayonnaise.
We meet every Monday morning during the weeks of summer vacation at Campton Congregational Church to pack and distribute lunches to all children who register for the program.
